The Water and Sewer Authority of Cabarrus County (WSACC) owns and operates a wastewater treatment facility on Muddy Creek providing service to customers in the Midland, North Carolina area. The treatment facilities were originally constructed as a 75,000 gallon per day (gpd) modular wastewater treatment plant and were subsequently expanded in 2009 to increase the capacity to 150,000 gpd. Growth in the area has continued and WSACC requested Willis Engineers assist in further expansion of the facilities to 300,000 gpd.
The renovation and expansion project included re-configuring the existing modular treatment units to provide additional aeration capacity along with the addition of two new clarifiers in reutilization of many of the existing plant components. The previous clarifiers were converted to sludge holding facilities, likewise additional filtration facilities were added and the ultraviolet disinfection system replaced with one of larger capacity. The new facility was placed online in 2019 and is more than capable of meeting the current permit limits.
