The City of Hendersonville Mud Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant serves the City and surrounding areas of Henderson County. The original plant was built in 1962 and was renovated and expanded in the 1980’s to a nominal capacity of 3.6 million gallons per day (MGD), Despite renovation efforts, the plant failed to meet effluent permit criteria during wet weather when flows exceeded 2.5 MGD. The City turned to Willis Engineers to undertake a study of options for plant expansion and treatment performance improvement.

After extensive evaluation, the City elected to expand the facilities and substantially replace the treatment process. Willis Engineers designed and oversaw construction of a new 4.8 million gallons per day (MGD) treatment facility using a generously sized single-stage biological process.

The plant also utilizes continuously-cleaned tertiary filtration and ultraviolet disinfection to consistently achieve high quality effluent.

The existing digester was converted to a gravity thickener and second tank added. These thickeners prepare sludge for treatment in a state-of-the-art Class A biosolids facility. Other existing buildings were converted for use by the City maintenance staff. Since commissioning the facilities, performance has been excellent, far exceeding the City’s expectations.
